FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A universal coming of age story with a modern twist is presented in the fresh and heartwarming tale of high school hip-hop performers in HE SISTA HOOD: ON THE MIC first time novelist and acclaimed media personality E-Fierce, (Atria Books; Paperback Original $14.00; ISBN: 0-7432-8515-8: Pub. Date: July 11, 2006.) E-Fierce pierces into the ever-changing and ever-entertaining world of high school students, focusing on Mariposa, a tough Puerto Rican girl who explodes on the mic. But for all of her verbal vigor, deep down inside she is just a girl trying to fit in.
E-Fierce was born and raised in San Francisco's "Mission" neighborhood and she likes to refer to herself as a survivor of the school of life. She states, "I wrote the Sista Hood because I grew tired of one-dimensional stories that did not reflect my experience. And there were few outlets that intersected my combination of identities with my love for hip-hop."
Recognized as an Emerging Latina Voice of Filmmaking by Hispanic Magazine (Jan/Feb 2005), E-Fierce is also Co-Founder of Chica Luna Productions, a non-profit organization created to identify, develop and support other women of color seeking to make socially conscious entertainment. She adds, "I want the next generation of multi-media saavy writers, performers and emcees to realize their dreams. Through my work, I want to create a better vision of Latinas in the US."
Mari (aka MC Patria) is starting the second semester of her freshman year at Stanford High School; not an easy adjustment, especially because Stanford High is a prestigious, mostly white school - worlds away from the Mission barrio she calls home.
Added to the mix is Ezekiel, Mari's summer friend and rapping buddy, not to mention one of the most sought-after boys at school. The only problem for Mari is that Ezekiel already has a girlfriend - Jennifer Hoffman, the school's most popular emcee.
When the school announces a talent show, Mari believes she will get the chance to best Jennifer and win Ezekiel. But she can't do it alone. Together with her new friends Sadie (Soul Siren), Evita (DJ Esa), and Liza (Pinay-1), Mari forms a hip-hop crew called the Sista Hood, ready to take on any challengers. The girls prepare for the show and utilize their individual talents and in doing so they form everlasting bonds and learn the special power of friendship. Tossing out rhymes and laying down beats becomes an outlet for expression and a confirmation of the girls' unique identities.
E-Fierce deftly captures the complex lives and emotions of Latino and African-American high school outsiders looking for a way in. She seamlessly weaves the students' racial tensions and raging hormones together to give a rich and compelling portrait of urban high school life.
E-Fierce received her BA in Ethnic Studies and English from U.C. Berkley and she earned her MFA in film from Columbia University. After battling cancer, she went on to become an award winning filmmaker and writer who now presides in New York City. E-Fierce is a creative partner of Sister Outsider Entertainment, which seeks to produce quality urban media. E-Fierce is currently working on her first feature film, OUTSIDE THE WALL (winner of 2005 Tribeca-All-Access Fellowship) - a film about a Puerto Rican graffiti artist - which she wrote and will direct. She is also adapting THE SISTAHOOD into a screenplay for film. Her next novel will be called LOVELINES- a story about the game of love among four generations of Puerto Rican women.
