CONTEST DETAILS:
We are looking for lessons plans that can be implemented in
after-school/community based youth programs, and English or History high
school classes; that create dialogue in multi-cultural situations; that
create dialogue on topics that are difficult to voice (sexuality, race,
language, nationality, gender); that create and build alliance among
different cultures. Some questions to consider while developing lesson: Who
is your support when nobody else seems to listen? Who decides who your
friends are? Who decides who you got to love? How do you learn to love
yourself when nobody else seems to love you? These are the kind of questions
the book seeks to address and inspire young adults to talk about. These
questions will help your students talk about these same issues in an
academic and creative environment. For further questions: check us out at
www.thesistahood.com, email at efierce@thesistahood.com
ABOUT THE BOOK:
The Sista Hood: On The Mic is a universal coming of age
story for youth ages 13-18, with a modern twist that is presented in the
fresh and heartwarming tale of high school hip-hop performers. The author,
E-Fierce, delves into the ever-changing and ever-entertaining world of high
school students, focusing on Mariposa, a tough Puerto Rican girl who
explodes on the mic. But for all of her verbal vigor, deep down inside she
is just a girl trying to fit in. She seamlessly weaves the students' racial
tensions and raging hormones together to give a rich and compelling portrait
of urban high school life.
